Cavendish Nuclear response to the publication of UK Government’s Energy Security Strategy and its commitment to new nuclear

Cavendish Nuclear, a wholly owned subsidiary of Babcock International Group is pleased to see the publication of UK Government’s Energy Security Strategy and its commitment to new nuclear.

Nuclear has a key role in delivering UK energy security of supply, meeting net zero by 2050 and creating great jobs. This is a focus area for Cavendish Nuclear, through our support to existing nuclear reactors, the construction of Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, and our work to develop advanced nuclear technologies for the future.

We are supporting GW scale nuclear build as part of the MEH Alliance, delivering the main mechanical, electrical, heating and ventilation works for Hinkley Point C, the UK’s first new nuclear power station in a generation. We also have significant roles in engineering, project management and commissioning. In addition, we are supporting project development for Sizewell C which will produce the equivalent of 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas per year. Building up to 15 GW by 2035 would save 31 million tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

We have a Memorandum of Understanding with Rolls Royce to support the design, licensing, manufacturing and delivery of their SMR, a programme which will generate about 6,000 jobs in the next five years, and 40,000 over the next 15, both in manufacturing and operation. Additionally, we are supporting delivery of the first full-scale demonstration of modular construction for an advanced modular reactor (U-Battery) at our Whetstone manufacturing facility.

We firmly believe that Nuclear remains the only source of proven, reliable, non-weather dependent clean power generation of electricity and heat and here at Cavendish Nuclear we are proud of the role we are playing in delivering more British nuclear power.
