Japan and US decommissioning

Cavendish Nuclear is actively involved in international decommissioning projects in both the United States and Japan, leveraging its UK expertise to tackle complex nuclear challenge

Cavendish Nuclear USA is part of the Southern Ohio Cleanup Company LLC.

  • Demolition and disposal of gaseous diffusion plant facilities and ancillary buildings.
  • Remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater.
  • Disposition of uranium material.
  • Construction and operation of a new multi-cell on-site waste disposal facility. This project is one of the largest DOE decommissioning contracts and is addressing legacy contamination from uranium enrichment operations that ended in 2001.

Cavendish Nuclear Japan, in partnership, is supporting the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) in decommissioning the Monju sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor.

  • Design and construction of a UK-based facility to treat sodium coolant removal
  • Conversion of sodium into sodium hydroxide for industrial reuse (non-radiological hazard).
  • Engineering and regulatory support for dismantling reactor systems. This work builds on Cavendish’s experience with the UK’s Prototype Fast Reactor, which shares design similarities with Monju.
