Nuclear Decommissioning Solutions – Contract Success

A new joint venture between Altrad, Cavendish Nuclear and Shepley Engineers has secured a major long-term contract under Sellafield Ltd’s £4.6 billion framework, supporting one of the UK’s most complex nuclear decommissioning programmes.

The three companies bring decades of combined experience working on successful frameworks for Sellafield Ltd, including the Decommissioning Delivery Partnership (DDP) and Design Services Alliance (DSA).

The newly established Joint Venture, Nuclear Decommissioning Solutions (NDS), will work with other organisations within the framework to support high-hazard risk reduction programmes on the Sellafield site, delivered through the Decommissioning & Nuclear Waste Partnership (DNWP).

DNWP will replace and build upon the capabilities successfully delivered through the existing DDP and DSA, ahead of their expiry.

The framework agreement will be in place for an initial period of nine years with an option for a further six years, through to 2040 and will support activities relating to the retrieval of waste materials from the site’s oldest facilities, the treating and storing of those materials and to the decommissioning of redundant assets.

On behalf of Nuclear Decommissioning Solutions Mike Lacey, Framework Director, commented:

“NDS are delighted to be part of the DNWP Framework, combining the professional skills and experience of Altrad, Cavendish Nuclear and Shepley Engineers to provide specialist expertise to the programme. We will work together with our Sellafield Silos Partner to support this nationally important programme of retrieval operations on Lot 3. By working collaboratively, in all aspects of our joint undertaking, we will create a lasting legacy and safe environment for future generations. In committing to the proposed long-term sustainability plan with our partners, which will be at the heart of everything we do, we will continue to deliver real social impact and value to the local communities.”

Leigh Wakefield, Civil Decommissioning Business Director, Cavendish Nuclear said:

“Building on our strong relationships with Altrad, Shepley, and our trusted supply chain partners this achievement demonstrates the depth of our nuclear expertise and the power of collaboration across the DNWP framework to safely deliver one of the UK’s most important decommissioning programmes.”

Gavin Jakubowski, Managing Director, Shepley Engineers said:

“We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Sellafield through the DNWP Lot 3 framework. This award builds on the collaborative success of DDP Lot 3 and reflects our shared commitment to safe, efficient delivery. Just as importantly, it enables us to give something back, creating lasting social value and supporting the communities we serve.”

NDS will work collaboratively with suppliers at every stage, from planning to delivery – to ensure smooth outcomes and shared success. This provides a value-for-money route to specialist supply chain capabilities and capacities needed for future decommissioning tasks and projects.

Paul Raper, Altrad Business Unit Director (Nuclear: Decommissioning), said:

“Altrad is proud to be a founding partner in Nuclear Decommissioning Solutions and to continue our long-standing collaboration with Sellafield through the DNWP framework. This achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of our teams, who have consistently delivered safe, innovative and value-driven solutions across the UK’s nuclear decommissioning programmes. Through NDS, we look forward to playing a key role in supporting the retrievals mission and hazard reduction at Sellafield, while creating meaningful opportunities for our people, our partners, and the local community.”
