This summer Cavendish Nuclear has been actively working with local communities in Cumbria with support from The Whitehaven and District Credit Union and Women out West (WoW).
Our “In the Community Workshops” aim to reach out to local people in underrepresented groups in West Cumbria to provide them with help and guidance about CVs and interview skills. We have joined forces with ‘ClearNorth’ a recruitment company based in Fleswick Court, Westlakes to provide the latest up-to-date do’s and don’ts in the current economic climate.
The sessions create an open, informal space where attendees are able to share life experiences and have the opportunity to talk to different people about the career aspirations and the steps they need to take in order to achieve them. Most conversations are about developing self-confidence and learning how to sell yourself effectively as attendees are either currently unemployed or looking to change employer in the near future.
Sarah Dockeray, Project Assistant at Cavendish Nuclear who led on the development of these courses said:
‘These Workshops really highlight the importance of having meaningful conversations with a diverse range of people. It’s been great to get out and support local people in my home town. You really see a shift as the session progresses, you start to understand others perspectives and feel able to share your career story with them and equally, to appreciate theirs.’
Andrea Dockeray, Manager at Whitehaven and District Credit Union said;

It was lovely to hear everyone say how much they got from the session due to Sarah’s enthusiasm and also her understanding of barriers for women returning to work’ .
Josephine Booth, Director of Time to Change overseeing the WoW Centre said:
‘The Workshop was very professionally run, the group participation exercise on how to complete a successful CV were very useful. We really look forward to working with Sarah more to make these sessions a regular occurrence at the WoW centre, sessions like this are integral to the Centres Success.’
