Using nature to improve assay accuracy

Tasked with improving the accuracy in the radiometric assay of nuclear waste, Cavendish Nuclear developed a technique for determining the exact location of activity concentrations within waste items.

Inspired by the ‘flocking’ of birds observed in nature our imaging technique determines the true location of activity in an item by applying an optimisation technique based on particle swarming. Previously an “average” or “worst case” scenario would be adopted; our technique can significantly reduce “phantom” activity assumptions allowing for more efficient disposal of waste items.

Our Particle Swarm Imaging technology (PSIM) won an Innovation Award from Sellafield nuclear site in 2014.
