Using innovation to extend lifetime operations
Wylfa Power Station’s operational life was extended by three years due to an innovative technique deployed by Cavendish Nuclear.
Partially-used fuel was transferred between the shut-down reactor and the one remaining operational reactor. The project was the first of its kind in the UK, requiring the team to deal with a range of challenges in reactor operation, fuel management and plant safety as well as meeting practical, physical and regulatory constraints.
The project won an Innovation Award from the Institute of Physics and provided an extra £100 million of income for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. 2.6TWh of low-carbon electricity was generated during the extended lifetime.
