Harwell and Winfrith Optimisation Studies

Our science and technical specialists undertook a systematic assessment of the lifetime plans for Winfrith and Harwell to identify more cost effective waste packaging strategies

A major contributor to the cost savings was a change in waste container from the 2 metre stainless steel box to the Robust Concrete Box (RCB). The choice was determined through our rigorous and proven optioneering process involving a range of subject matter experts and the SLC workforce.

The move to the RCB at Harwell and Winfrith resulted in a cost saving to the RSRL LTP of £9 million. Cost savings of ~£200 million are anticipated from using the RCB at Magnox sites.
