Berkeley Vaults Project Update

Some fantastic news out of the Berkeley Vaults project this week as Cavendish Nuclear have now commenced modifications to the existing vault retrieval and processing facilities in support of changes to the Magnox waste packaging strategy.

These modifications will permit 6m3 reinforced concrete boxes to be handled, filled and exported for encapsulation by downstream facilities.

Installation of the new crane into the existing Import / Export overbuilding.

The Berkeley Active Waste Vaults (AWV) retrieval programme comprises a number of discrete projects for the design and installation of mechanical handling and processing equipment required to retrieve legacy Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) from three subterranean vaults.

The site installation works follow a successful eighteen month programme of design, manufacture and off site testing and is scheduled for completion during early 2020.
