Low Level Waste Repository Ltd (LLWR) required measurements of a large number of bags of alpha contaminated waste to segregate the waste between alpha low level waste (LLW) and alpha Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), in accordance with the LLWR/ NDA Waste Hierarchy.  Cavendish Nuclear provided the DrumScan® LRGS Alpha system to deliver the measurements.

More than 11,000 bags have been successfully monitored under this service to LLWR. Only 11 out of these bags were shown to be ILW.

Disposing of the bags as LLW rather than ILW produces significant cost savings. The measurements service has resulted in an overall lifetime waste disposal and management saving of £30million.

Rob Yetts, PCM Programme Delivery Manager for LLWR, said: “The establishment of the route embraces the philosophy of the Waste Hierarchy. Its success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved and demonstrates a culture of continued improvement along with significant cost savings.”
